According to many sources (including Wikipedia), the Greek Civil War lasted from 1946 to 1949. But most agree that the war arose when leftist and rightist forces began fighting to exploit the power vacuum left by the retreat of occupying Axis forces in late 1943. Some sources see this as the beginning of the first phase of the war. (One such source was Ohio State University; my Google search returned a number of scholarly history books that agree, as well as Study.com, which tempts you in but then hides behind a paywall!)
